Beyond your smile

Let's talk about
jaw tension.
And your goals.

Clenching, jaw muscle tenderness, or facial aesthetic goals? Start with an individualized consultation. Dr. Stroh offers therapeutic and cosmetic neuromodulator consultations as part of the practice's approach to care.

For TMJ concerns, we first assess what may be causing your symptoms and discuss conservative options, which may include habit changes, a custom appliance, or referral. Botulinum toxin may be discussed for selected patients after reviewing alternatives and risks.

Botulinum toxin use for temporomandibular disorders is off-label and is not FDA-approved for TMD. Evidence is mixed, and results vary. A consultation does not mean injections are recommended. Learn about TMD treatment from NIDCR.

Make an informed decision

Your consultation,
explained.

Therapeutic and cosmetic goals are different.

For jaw concerns, we assess symptoms and discuss the likely source of discomfort before considering treatment. For cosmetic goals, we discuss the areas you would like to address, your medical history, the product proposed, and realistic expectations. Botox is a specific brand of botulinum toxin; ask which product is being recommended for your treatment.

What happens during a TMJ consultation?

Bring a description of your symptoms, their duration, your medications, and any previous treatment. We examine the jaw muscles and joints and look for dental causes of pain. We may recommend conservative care, an appliance, further evaluation, or referral before considering injections.

Is Botox FDA-approved for TMD?

No. Botulinum toxin use for temporomandibular disorders is off-label. Studies have shown mixed results, and benefit is not guaranteed. We discuss the evidence, alternatives, and risks before any decision.

What risks should I discuss?

Ask about the risks of the specific product, dose, and injection sites, including bruising, unwanted muscle weakness, changes in chewing or facial expression, and rare serious effects. Your medical history and medications affect whether treatment is appropriate. Review the product's medication guide and consent information with your clinician.

What does a consultation cost?

Contact our team for current consultation fees, treatment estimates, and payment options. Treatment cost varies with the plan, product, and amount used. Do not assume insurance coverage; ask your plan about its terms.
